Overall design process

🧠 Welcome to my thought process

🚩 Problem

Design a new freemium Atlassian product
that can be used by students.

"Targeting students in particular gives Atlassian the opportunity to introduce our tools to users early so that they can bring it with them when they enter the workforce."  - Design brief from Atlassian

Outdated design aesthetics

"We carry a lot of legacy designs as a result of
being an early player in the field."
The existing design requires an update to align with contemporary design trends, ensuring a modern and visually appealing user experience.

Limited appeal to younger demographics

"To remain competitive, there is
immense potential to capture the younger generation and keep up with today’s design trends."
The current products lack elements that resonate with younger generations. Enhancements are needed to make the platform more engaging and appealing to this demographic.

Insuffient support for student transition

"Targeting students in particular gives Atlassian the opportunity to introduce our tools to users early so that they can bring it with them when
they enter the workforce."
The products should be enhanced to better assist students in transitioning from university to workforce. This may involve incorporating features or resources that provide guidance and support during this ciritical phase.

📍Reframe the problem

How might we

How might we support students and young professionals (18-29) that work on multiple projects to improve their task and time management while maintaining Atlassian's brand identity and creating free and premium features?

💻Online ethnography

Users want minimal learning curve

The Atlassian Suite sets the industry standard, placing a strong focus on remote work and cross-functional collaboration. Its key strengths lie in a solid company reputation and a well-developed integration ecosystem. However, it tends to prioritize functionality over aesthetics, and there may be challenges in attracting younger generations.

In the online ethnography research conducted within Jira and Trello forums and discussion groups, Jira faced criticism for its steep learning curve, particularly noted by non-technical users. Conversely, Trello received positive feedback for its user-friendly interface, making it accessible and easy to use.
